There are two different ways to add new content to your website. Creating a new page and creating a new post. Which one your choose depends on what kind of content you are wanting to create. Below we will cover the differences between pages and posts, and how to create a new page or post.
Like just about every other website out there WordPress allows you to create different pages. Standard types of pages include: The Home page, an About page, a Contact page and a Blog or Article page. These pages provide information like: how to contact you, a description of your website, yourself or your business, the types of products you sell or services your provide, or even industry related links and resources. Below is an example pages on a couple of websites I have designed.
As you can see in this example from PCHandyMaam the pages of this website are: About, Articles, Contact, Resources and Services.
If you are planning on a small website, that you build and pretty much leave alone after that, you may want to use only pages, and not worry about posts all together.
For example if you are a contractor, you may only need a couple pages to inform people of your services, personnel, location, business hours and how to contact you. You are not going to be writing articles every week, and other than maybe adding a couple pictures or updating some information, the content of your website will remain relatively unchanged for months even years.
WordPress originally came on the scene as a tool for blogging. Blog stands for “web log”. Now blogging originated as a sort of online journal for people, and wordpress was structured to meet that need. In wordpress you will have one page that is designated as your “blog page”. The default installation is that this page is your home page (so you will not see an actual link to the “blog” on your pages toolbar. New posts, (by default) will show up in chronological order on this blog page. Below is an example of a website with this exact layout.
Ocala Faux Finish has three pages that are easily recognizable: About, Contact and Resources. The home page, which you are viewing, is the blog page. Each image you see is a new article or post to this blog. The particular templates uses feature images to link to each blog post. In a more traditional set up you would instead see a title and possibly an excerpt from each post.
Now that you understand the difference between pages and posts on your website, lets go over how to Create and Publish some new content.
Creating a new Page in WordPress
If you haven’t done so already, go ahead and log into your website’s dashboard. Once logged in, you will notice a list of options along the left hand side of the website. This is where we will begin.
1. Hover over the word “Pages” and then click on “New Page”.
Once you click on new page you will be brought to the template installed in wordpress that allows you to create a new page.
2. Add a title and content to your page.
What comes next is all up to you. The sky is the limit here. At the very least you will create a title, and add some content to the page. You also have the option of changing the order in which pages are listed. The default is 0 and this will list the pages in alphabetical order. You can also set a feature image for this page. Make sure you check the support materials provided by the theme designer to ensure that your photo is the proper size and will display properly on your page. (See the article on selecting themes.)
3. Click on Publish to add your new page to your website.
And you’re done. It’s that easy. the hard part really is generating the content for the page. (Dang writer’s block anyway!)
Head on over to your website and check out the new page that you have added. Don’t worry if you have some typing mistakes, or need to change some things. Editing WordPress pages is just as easy as publishing them!
Now let’s discuss how to post a new article to your blog.
1. Hover over Posts then click on New Post.
Once you click on New Post, you will be brought to the template in WordPress that allows you to create a new post.
2. Add a title and content to your post.
The area where you add your title and create the content of your blog post looks identical to the template used to create pages.
